Is your website giving you the ick? You need to read this
Go from ick to schmick“If your website has been making you feel all the wrong things lately, there’s a high chance you’ve got the website ick. The good news? This doesn’t necessarily mean you need a whole new website.”
Has your website been making you feel all the wrong things lately?
You cringe when someone asks for your URL. You avoid sending it to people. You recoil in fear anytime you remember there’s something you need to update. Maybe you’re just flat-out embarrassed by a website that no longer represents who you are, what you offer or where your business is today.
Or maybe you can’t even put your finger on what’s wrong, you just know it doesn’t feel right anymore.
If that sounds familiar, there’s a high chance you’ve got the website ick.
The good news? This doesn’t necessarily mean you need a whole new website.
Before you throw your current website down the toilet…
Falling out of love with your website doesn’t necessarily mean you need to start again – sometimes it just needs a little love in all the right places.
Businesses evolve: your services change, your branding becomes more refined, your audience shifts and you get clearer on what you actually want to be known for. Meanwhile, the website you created two, three or five years ago can silently stay exactly where you left it: in the past.
Eventually, the disconnect gets loud. And this is where a few strategic changes can make a BIG difference to how your website:
→ Looks
→ Feels
→ Functions
→ Gets found
→ Connects
→ Converts
The tricky part is working out which changes are actually worth investing in.
Enter: the Website Audit
This is exactly where a Website Audit enters the picture.
I like to think of it as a professional second set of eyes on your website – I take a deep dive into what you currently have to uncover what’s working, what isn’t and where there are opportunities to make it better.
I look at your website holistically, covering elements like your:
Design & branding — Does your website visually reflect the quality and personality of your business today?
User experience — Is information easy to find? Does the structure make sense? Are you guiding visitors towards the right actions without p*ssing them off in the process?
Mobile optimisation — Does the experience hold up when someone visits from their phone, which they most likely will?
SEO/AEO — Are you giving search engines (this includes ol’ ChatGPT) the information they need to understand your website and help the right people find you?
Copy & content — Is your messaging clear, useful and communicating what makes your business worth choosing?
Photography & imagery — Are your visuals helping tell your story and elevating the overall experience?
Functionality — Is everything actually working the way it should be?
Platform suitability — Is your current website platform still the right fit for what your business needs?
And then what? I tell you what to actually do about it
Because there’s not much value in me handing you a list of 36 things that are wrong with your website, wishing you the best of luck and disappearing into the night.
You might need a new website, and you also might not.
A Website Audit gives you the clarity to make that decision before committing to a full redesign.
Rather than changing things for the sake of changing them, the goal is to identify the updates that could have the biggest impact and where you should invest your time and money.
You might realise your website actually has great bones, and there are a handful of changes you can confidently make yourself. Or you might confirm that your website has done it’s time, thanked everyone for coming, and is ready for retirement.
Either way, you’ll walk away with a clear, actionable Audit Report that gives you the clarity to make the best decision for your business. And, if you do decide to invest in a new website, you can take the purchase price straight off the bottom line of any future web design services you undertake with me (winning!).
If you’ve made it this far, I have a sneaking suspicion you might have already come to the realisation that your website is giving you the ick.
If you have, I hope you’ve also realised that getting your website back on track doesn’t have to mean throwing the baby out with the bathwater and starting again. You’d be surprised how far a little bit of website TLC can go.
